Nyala Shipping: Mercy Ships Cargo Day Award
23 September 2022
Nyala Shipping’s contribution to transformational medical initiative recognised
Nyala Shipping SA, the shipping arm of Oryx Energies SA, was proud to collect the Mercy Ships Cargo Day Award for the best charterer of 2021 at the Cargo Day Ball held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 22 September 2022.
The NGO Mercy Ships is supported by the global shipping and trading community yearly through ‘Cargo Day’, an annual online event during which cargoes are pledged, donations made and commissions shared in favour of Mercy Ships. More than US$ 4.7 million has been raised for Mercy Ships by this means from its Geneva chapter since 2016.
At the event ceremony, Gilles Rolland, Managing Director of Nyala Shipping, commented, “We have supported Cargo Day since the beginning and hope that many more companies will join us in the course of time. The building of the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, the Global Mercy, is a huge achievement that will have a transformational effect during the half-century to come, and we are delighted to have been able to make a contribution to its success.”
Moussa Diao, CEO of Oryx Energies SA, added, “As part of the private entrepreneurial investment group AOG that has pioneered energy development in Africa, Oryx Energies, together with Nyala Shipping SA and Addax Energy SA, has long been familiar with Mercy Ships. In Sierra Leone, our group purchased land and initiated the construction of a clinic for women and children. They invited Mercy Ships to manage and staff this clinic, which has been operational since 2005. Africa is in our DNA, and this project is particularly close to my heart as I grew up in Senegal myself and have lived and worked in various African countries. Mercy Ships has shown time and again its power to transform lives and offer new hope for the future.”
