Oryx Energies pledges to convert 6 million Tanzanian households towards clean cooking and displays strong ambitions for its other sub-Saharan subsidiaries

Oryx Energies has made a significant pledge to advance clean cooking initiatives during the IEA Summit on Clean Cooking for Africa held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, co-chaired by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan, on 14 May 2024.

As a leading company in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) market in sub-Saharan Africa, Oryx Energies has committed to converting a further 6 million Tanzanian households from charcoal and firewood to LPG by the year 2034.

A similar proactive approach to clean cooking initiatives will also be developed in the nine other sub-Saharan Oryx Gas affiliates.

Speaking at the Summit panel session titled “How to Advance the Clean Cooking Agenda in Industries”, Benoît Araman, Managing Director of Oryx Gas Tanzania Limited (OGTL), stated: “Since 2015, Oryx Energies has invested approximately $100 million in the Tanzanian LPG market through our local affiliate OGTL, and we pioneered and implemented the clean cooking programme here since 2021. Our pledge implies that OGTL will continue to invest in the necessary infrastructure to reach this goal.”

Vincent Fleury, Business Line Manager of LPG at Oryx Energies, said: “Oryx Energies’ continued investment in LPG capabilities reflects its unwavering commitment to advancing clean cooking solutions across sub-Saharan Africa. The company remains dedicated to expanding its LPG distribution network, ensuring access to clean energy even in the most remote regions. Continued strategic investments and community engagement can significantly impact the transition towards cleaner energy.”

Oryx Energies has also endorsed the Clean Cooking Declaration, a commitment to making 2024 a pivotal year for clean cooking. The full declaration can be accessed here.
